Melissa Bearns is an Oregon-based freelance writer and photographer who covers everything from action sports such as kayaking, snowboarding and sailing to food, spirits, business and social issues. She began her career at a small daily in New Hampshire as a columnist before studying journalism and new media at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University where she received her Master's degree. She has worked at two dailies, two alt-weeklies, helped get a magazine up and running and recently received awards from the Northwest and Oregon chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists. In addition to writing and photography, she helps concert promoters and non-profit organizations find sponsors for events and cool projects.
